Welcome to Chilango Racing Team

F1 in Schools

Welcome to Mexico!

Beautiful Mexico is located just south of the United States and has a long history and a proud heritage.

Our country is thousands of years old and is very well know for its culture, its beautiful coastlines and beaches, its unequaled gastronomical flavors, its lively music and its warm and welcoming people.

We are very proud to represent our beautiful Mexico and would be very happy to have you visit our home.

Chilango Racing Team

Our name and logo are the result of combining the word “Chilango”, which is a common term used to refer to a resident of Mexico City, and a hot serrano pepper.

We are chilangos and we are hot.

Xavier “Flaco” Lebrija
Team Manager, Manufacturing and Design Engineer

Xavier’s passion for motor sports and racing compelled him to seek and gain acceptance into the F1 in Schools program and competition. He brings the same passion into the team’s activities in his role as the team’s founder, manager and manufacturing engineer. Other than motor sports, Xavier is a fan of the New England Patriots and an amateur golfer. His short term plans involve seeking acceptance in a prestigious university abroad in order to further pursue his interests in cars and engineering.

Gonzalo “Gonz” Bolio
Team Resources and Design Engineer

Gonzalo recently earned 1st place in Mexico´s National Physics competition and 2nd place in Mexico´s National History Olympiad. He was also awarded the Member of the Cabinet prize in the LDZ program at the National Hispanic Institute at Rochester University. Other than motor sports, Gonzalo enjoys reading and is currently learning German and Latin. His short term plans involve seeking acceptance in a prestigious university in Europe or America to pursue his dreams.

Eduardo “Edu” Fernandez-Pellon
Graphic Designer

Eduardo was brought on board by Xavier because of his passion for motorsports and Formula 1 racing. He is knowledgeable in aerodynamics and also a savvy designer. Another big fan of the NFL, Eduardo is a fierce, yet friendly rival of Xavier because he favors the New York Jets. His sense of humor, which he carries wherever he goes, is a welcome addition to the team. Eduardo plans to continue his engineering studies and seek further interests in the automotive industry.

Cedros Norte

Cedros Norte is celebrating it’s 25th birthday!

Our alma mater’s philosophy is based on virtues, responsibilities and Catholic family values, all of which are clearly expressed in our emblematic slogan “Amicus Protectio Fortis

Cedros Norte is a boys-only school located on the northern suburbs of Mexico City and has a very high standard education, from Kindergarten to High School.

Our school delivers a high standard education program, yet provides an extremely relaxed atmosphere where students are encouraged to pursue athletic, cultural, artistic and other extra-curricular interests. Our famous symphony orchestra, which has toured nationwide, is a clear example of our student’s excellence and we hope that our pioneering effort in the F1 in Schools program also becomes an emblematic part of our school’s academic accomplishments.

Our school mascot, the wolf, is representative of our students’ valor, team collaboration, courage and strength. We are honored to be part of this competition and part of this prestigious gathering of talents from around the world.

The Challenge

This is Mexico’s first participation in an F1 in Schools competition and our team accepted the great challenge of participating in the World Finals with very no experience and very little time to prepare.

Bringing all the resources together, including the required financial support, became such a race against the clock that the project was severely underfunded until the very last moment, on September 21st 2012.

The Design

Understanding and learning to use SolidWorks was a challenge in itself. Next came our first attempts at designing a car that would comply with all the F1 in Schools specifications and that took a lot of work, but we are quick learners and overcame both hurdles in a few weeks. We ultimately produced some initial prototypes that were slowly fine tuned into our competition cars.

Manufacture

We were fortunate to obtain the full support and timely advise from a local university. They kindly allowed us to use their engineering labs and equipment for manufacture.

Testing

Showing up at the World Finals without actually testing and racing our prototypes would’ve been a very bad idea, so we needed to set up our own track and race system. Our school’s hallways became the ideal testing grounds.

Putting it all Together

Gathering all the resources, equipment, materials, uniforms and financial support was a challenge in itself, and traveling half way around the world in order to attend the World Finals was a logistical nightmare. But designing, testing and building our race cars was a fascinating endeavor. Being here is a dream come true.

Our Thanks

It took several willing and trusting sponsors to finance our project. It took our school’s flexibility and support to allow for the required time and space. It took our parents’ patience and guidance to get here.We thank them all and are very excited to be here.
